Grounds and Gardening

Grounds

McLean Gardens engages a contractor to provide landscaping services and maintenance of the lawns, shrubs, and trees.  Management and the Landscape and Sustainability Committee, and when appropriate work to set annual goals for and evaluations of the landscape contractor and for improving the health and appearance of our grounds.  The flower beds around the Cherub Fountain and the various mermaid sculptures are also maintained by the landscape contractor.

Residents can help maintain the quality of the landscaping by staying on the pathways as much as possible, leaving the shrubs alone (pruning by residents is not permitted), and avoiding any activities that could damage the grass, shrubbery, or trees.  Those interested in landscaping matters can volunteer for the Landscape Committee.  To volunteer, call the office (202) 966-9780 or email [email protected].

If you spot a problem with the landscaping, please call the office at (202) 966-9780 or send an email to [email protected].

Individual Gardens
Most of the flower beds around buildings are created and maintained by residents.  Some residents provide color and greenery for their entryways with containers for flowers and small ornamental shrubs.  To make sure these flowers and plants are well maintained, the Association asks gardeners to register annually with the “Garden Planting Request Form.”  Gardeners are expected to follow these guidelines:

Location of Gardens

  • Use existing mulched beds to the extent possible; new beds are permitted with the agreement of entryway neighbors and Management.
  • Gardeners may use containers provided that they are either terracotta or gray in color and that entryway neighbors, the Landscape Committee, and Management agree.  Containers must drain and not create any standing pools of water (for mosquito control).
  • Plants may not block any windows..

Plants

  • Normally, annuals are planted in individual flower beds.
  • The only perennials allowed are crocus, daffodils, day lilies, iris, and tulips. Vegetables, roses, climbing vines, and other perennials are not permitted.
  • Herbs may be planted only in containers.
  • No plants may be allowed to grow on the walls or porticoes of the buildings.

Garden Borders, Mulch, and Ornaments

  • Garden borders must facilitate easy regular mowing of adjacent lawn areas.
  • Natural rocks may be used as a bed border with the agreement of entryway neighbors, the Landscape Committee, and Management. Fencing, plastic or metal bed borders, and chicken wire may not be used around or in gardens.
  • Every spring the landscaping contractor mulches all existing flower beds.  Additional supplies of mulch are located near the recycling center on Langley Court.  Crushed rock or other kinds of bed coverings are not permitted.
  • Trellises, garden ornaments, and bird baths are not allowed.

Equipment

  • To provide support for plants, use only small stakes, no more than ¼ inch in diameter.  For safety reasons, stakes must be rounded on the top and break away easily if someone by accident steps or falls on them.
  • Gardeners must not store equipment or supplies outside.

Maintenance

  • Once planted, gardens must be maintained throughout the growing season.  Dead plants and unsightly weeds must be removed as soon as possible.
  • All gardens must be cut back and cleaned before the onset of winter weather.
