Owned by the District of Columbia, this 30+ year-old community garden, in the Newark Street Park, offers residents of McLean Gardens and their neighbors the opportunity to have a plot for flowers, vegetables, and other plants.
Any District resident can apply for membership. Members pay a nominal fee per year and volunteer ten hours of service to the Newark St. Community Garden Association ($25 for the first year; $15 thereafter or $20 with no service contribution). Tools, mulch, and water are available to gardeners.
A Children’s Garden and in-season programs give pre-schoolers regular opportunities to look at worms and dig in the worm bed, plant seeds, water, and see the results of their work. There is a toddler-sized picnic table and children’s garden equipment.
